How to Paint the Brick Around a Fireplace a Natural Stone Color

Brick fireplaces typically are constructed using reddish-colored terra cotta clay bricks. However, terra cotta bricks may look out of place in a room decorated in stone-colored cream or gray tones. Although professional painters can refinish terra cotta brick fireplaces using natural stone paint, hiring a professional painter may not be in your decorating budget. Save money by painting the terra cotta brick fireplace yourself using inexpensive materials purchased from a home improvement or hardware supply store.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the surface of the brick fireplace using a sanding buffer with a medium-grain sanding ring. This removes sharp edges or chipping from the bricks.

    • 2

Vacuum the surface of the bricks and the surrounding areas using a shop vacuum with a brush attachment.

    • 3

Fill a paint tray with stone-colored latex paint, then coat a 3-inch-wide flat paintbrush with the latex paint. Select either cream or gray stone-colored paint.

    • 4

Paint the surface of the brick fireplace, tapping the paintbrush into the creases and cracks as you paint. Allow the paint to dry for eight hours.

    • 5

Apply two more coats of stone-colored latex paint in the same manner as before, allowing the paint to dry for eight hours between each coat.
