Lacquer vs. Latex Paint for Cabinets

Nitrocellulose lacquer and latex paint are two types of surface finishes for you to choose from when finishing or updating the cabinets in your home. It is wise to study what type of medium is best to use when you are planning to paint the cabinets in the kitchen or bath. The paint or lacquer should be compatible with the type of wood and the look you want to achieve in your home.
  1. Lacquer

    • Lacquer is a predominantly resin-based material. Cotton or wood is also used in the manufacture of the water-resistant product. Mix lacquer with an approved solvent before applying it to the cabinets. Spray three to four layers of lacquer to build up a protective film on the cabinet surfaces. The material coats the wood surface but does not penetrate the grain. It is a fast-drying product, which makes the job go quickly. It comes in clear, white, black or several color choices to go with your decor.

    Latex

    • A primer should be applied to the cabinet surfaces before they are painted with latex. The creamy paint spreads smoothly over the cabinet surfaces with a sprayer, roller or brush application. The paint dries quickly after the paint job has been completed. It does take up to two weeks to cure, so the homeowner must be careful about hitting the surfaces. The paint will be easily marred if hit with an object prior to curing. Latex comes in many colors. It is desirable as a surface that can be cleaned with water and mild cleaners.

    Preparation

    • The preparation for lacquer and latex paint is the same. The hinges, knobs and any other components should be removed from the doors and drawers. All parts of the cabinet should be thoroughly cleaned to ensure that grease and grime are removed to allow latex or lacquer to adhere to the material. Sand any damaged or uneven areas on the surfaces of the cabinets and doors. Tape adjoining surfaces to prevent lacquer or latex from being sprayed or brushed onto the wall, window or countertop.

    Tools

    • Lacquer and latex paint can be applied to cabinets with a spray unit. Lacquer should be sprayed to achieve an even coat before it starts to dry. Latex can also be coated over the cabinet surfaces with a brush or roller that is manufactured for the medium. The interior portions of the cabinet can be painted using a synthetic brush.
