How to Paint a Grainy Ceiling

Ceilings with a grainy texture can become dirty or stained just like walls can, but they are more difficult to clean or repaint. Professional painters can apply paint in a specific way to cover a grainy ceiling, but your budget may not allow you to hire them. One solution is to save money by painting the ceiling yourself utilizing a few basic supplies and tools purchased inexpensively at any hardware store.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up a ladder directly underneath the area you will be painting. Select a ladder with a tray stand that is tall enough to enables you to paint without requiring you to fully extend your arms.

    • 2

Fill a paint tray with wall primer and set the tray onto the tray stand on the ladder.

    • 3

Coat a three-inch round paintbrush in primer and tap the primer over the surface of the grainy ceiling. The round paintbrush will push the primer into the creases and spaces of the grainy ceiling.

    • 4

Coat a paint roller in primer and roll the primer over the entire ceiling. Allow the ceiling to dry for 12 hours.

    • 5

Fill a second paint tray with latex wall pain and place the paint tray onto the tray stand on the ladder.

    • 6

Coat a second three-inch round paintbrush in the latex paint and tap the paintbrush over the grainy ceiling, as before.

    • 7

Coat a second paint roller in the latex wall paint and apply the paint over the entire ceiling. Allow the paint to dry for 12 hours.
