How to Apply Latex Paint Over Enamel Paint

When you are trying to refinish a room in your home, it can be difficult to know what to do with a wall that has been painted using a type of paint not suitable for the look you desire. For example, enamel paint has a high sheen you may want to cover up for a flatter look. One way to correct this problem is to paint over the enameled walls using latex paint. However, it is important to properly prepare them before applying the latex paint.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the entire wall using a sanding buffer with a medium-grain sanding ring. This will remove the enamel paint and any areas that are rough or uneven.

    • 2

Sand the entire wall using the sanding buffer with a fine-grain sanding ring. This will make the wall smooth and ready for a new layer of paint.

    • 3

Vacuum the wall and the surrounding areas with a shop vacuum, which can eliminate dust, debris and paint chips caused by sanding.

    • 4

Fill a paint tray with latex wall paint in any color you prefer.

    • 5

Coat the end of a 3-inch flat paintbrush with latex wall paint, then apply the paint to the corners and edges of the wall.

    • 6

Coat a paint roller in latex wall paint, then apply the paint over the entire wall. Allow the wall to dry for 12 hours.

    • 7

Apply two more layers of latex wall paint in the same manner as before. Allow each layer to dry for 12 hours in between coatings.
