How to Make Chalkboard Paint With a Satin Finish

Kids are always looking for a place to display their Picasso skills. A chalkboard wall will allow your child to bring his squiggly lines, doodles and imaginary creatures to life. If there is a wall in your child’s bedroom that needs a touch of creativity, use chalkboard paint. Although you could purchase premade chalkboard paint, making your own has an advantage. You can customize your chalkboard paint so that it matches or complements the walls of your child’s bedroom.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 3/4 cup of latex paint with a satin finish in a plastic container. The choice of paint color is up to you. Mix as much paint as you will need.

    • 2

Add 2 tablespoon of white, nonsanded grout.

    • 3

Use a paint stick to stir the mixture. This mixture should have a runny-oatmeal consistency. Add water to thin out the mixture if it's too thick. Don’t worry if you see tiny granules -- these will melt into the paint.

    • 4

Paint the wall with this chalkboard paint and a paintbrush. Let the paint dry as recommended by the paint manufacturer. If there are large clumps on the wall as you paint, pick them out with your fingers. Brush over the area a few times to smooth out the paint.

    • 5

Refrigerate your paint in a plastic airtight container so that it doesn’t dry and get clumpy.

    • 6

Apply another coat of chalkboard paint to the wall. Let dry.

    • 7

Use a chalkboard eraser, damp rag or sponge to clean the wall after use.
