How to Get Paint Chips to Stick to the Front Edge of a Counter

Paint chips are samples from a paint store that are ordinarily thrown away after you have chosen the color you want to use for your project. Instead of wasting all of the colorful paint chips, use them to decorate the edging around your counters. This enables you to create a more colorful and artistic-looking room without spending much money. Everything you need to stick paint chips onto the front edge of your counters can be purchased from any home improvement store.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the entire front edge of the counter using medium-grit sandpaper. Move the sandpaper in small, circular motions. This will smooth down any roughness or unevenness.

    • 2

Spread a 1/8-inch thick layer of mortar along the front edge of the counter using a small trowel. Do not apply mortar onto any other surface of the counter.

    • 3

Press paint chips of equal size halfway into the mortar. space the chips 1/8 inch apart. If the paint chips are not of equal size, cut them to size using shears or a small jigsaw. Allow the mortar to dry for eight to 12 hours.

    • 4

Spread a 1/8-inch thick layer of fine grout over the paint chips using the trowel. Avoid applying the grout over any other areas of the counter.

    • 5

Scrape off the grout using the trowel, which will move the grout into the spaces in between the chips and will remove any excess grout.

    • 6

Wipe off the grout from the surface of each paint chip using a damp sponge. Allow the grout to dry for 12 to 18 hours.

    • 7

Paint a layer of clear latex varnish over the entire front of the counter, then allow the varnish to dry for six to eight hours.
