How to Paint to Enlarge a Room

Small rooms can often seem further enclosed after adding furniture and decorations. In the fall and winter months, when sunshine is limited, the room can feel even more closed in. Using light colors or open colors to paint a room can give it an enlarged feel. To complement the openness the paint has created, use large pieces of furniture in the room. Small items can make a room look cluttered and cramped while a few large items open it up and enhance a bright decor.

Instructions

  1. Ceiling

    • 1

Tape along the border at the wall and the ceiling, placing the tape on the walls to protect from any paint drips. You don’t actually have to move everything out of the way, just move furniture away from the walls and cover with paint tarps.

    • 2

Use white paint on the ceiling. The color of white opens up a room and makes the ceiling seem higher, giving the illusion that the room is larger. You should start with the ceiling in case any paint drips onto the walls as you paint.

    • 3

Apply the paint to the ceiling using an extended roller brush. The brush will allow you to reach high ceilings without needing to spend too much time on a ladder.

    • 4

Touch up the borders of the ceiling using a paintbrush.

    • 5

Remove the tape from the walls once the paint is dry.

    • 6

Apply tape along the edge of the ceiling, baseboards and door frames before you paint to keep the border even.

    • 7

Choose a light paint color to enlarge a space as these make a room look brighter. Neutral colors such as white, cream or beige are excellent choices. You also can look for paint with a blue base as this also will lighten up a room.

    • 8

Use a combination of paint rollers on the walls and a paintbrush along the borders and corners to paint the room.

    • 9

Pull away the tape after the paint dries and touch up any necessary areas with a small paintbrush.
