How to Hard Coat a Wall

"Hard-coating" is applied onto stucco or foam-covered walls to give them a thin, hard coating that is waterproof and weather-resistant. You can hire professional masons and painters to apply hard-coat over your walls, but hiring a professional craftsman may not fit into your budget. Save money by applying a fast-drying variety of hard-coat yourself using a few basic tools and supplies that are available inexpensively at any hardware or home improvement store.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 1 gallon of water into a 5-gallon bucket. Add in a 50-lb. bag of one-coat-style hard-coat, and stir the mixture using a long-handle drill mixer until smooth.

    • 2

Add in a half-gallon more water, and continue to mix the hard-coat to make the mixture more spreadable.

    • 3

Allow the hard coat mixture to sit undisturbed for at least two minutes.

    • 4

Scoop the hard-coat mixture onto a flat trowel, then spread the hard coat over the wall in an even layer. Repeat to cover the entire wall. Allow the hard coat to dry for 12 to 18 hours.

Paint the hard coat, if preferred, using latex wall paint.
