How to Make a Vinyl Garage Door Look Like a Carriage-Style Door

A carriage-style door often features panels of windows near the top of the door and elaborate old world-style hinges. Traditional carriage doors are meant to swing open from the middle, but many modern carriage style garage doors are built more like conventional garage doors, with multiple-jointed panels that bend over a curve while raised into the garage. With some faux-painted windows and a few fake hinges, you can transform your conventional garage door into a beautiful carriage-style door.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the area where you will be painting the windows on the door. Use a scrub brush and soapy water.

    • 2

Tape off the borders of the paneled windows using painter's tape. The easiest shape is rectangles grouped together in fours, with an equal-armed cross shape between. Measure the distance between each window and the distance between the end windows and the sides of the garage door. This will ensure the windows are spaced evenly and centered in the door.

    • 3

Paint the window shapes you taped off with primer and wait for the primer to dry, according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 4

Paint over the primer with black, high-gloss paint. Wait for the paint to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions, then paint a second coat over the first. Use a wide, flat paintbrush or a paint roller. Wait for the second coat to dry.

    • 5

Remove the painter's tape from around the windows.

    • 6

Screw the spear-head hinges to the door. There should be two spear-head decorative hinges on either side of the garage door. The hinges should be lined up across from each other, with the top hinges positioned one-third of the way down from the top of the garage door. The bottom one should be positioned one third of the way up from the bottom of the garage door. Position the hinges so the pointed end points in toward the center of the door.

Measure the width of the door. Divide the width in half to find the center. Screw the decorative handles into the center of the door, spaced approximately 6 inches apart, at about chest height.
