Ways to Dim Lights With Regular Switches

Dimmer switches are relatively easy to install and have a proven record, but there are circumstances that don't allow for a regular switch to be replaced with a dimmer. There are alternative solutions available for those cases and they are all easy enough for anyone to install without hiring a professional electrician.
  1. Three-Way Light Bulbs

    • Three-way light bulbs are available in both incandescent and CFL styles.

Three-way light bulbs provide a simple method to adjust lighting between one of three predetermined settings. They don't provide the same wide range of brightness selections that a dimmer switch does, but they are suitable for any room that's used for different activities that each require varying levels of light. Use the brightest setting for reading or handicrafts, the medium setting for conversation or eating, and the dimmest setting for romantic activities or watching TV. Three-way bulbs require a compatible three-way lamp socket and are available in both incandescent and compact fluorescent styles.

    Lamp Dimmer

    • Individual lamp dimmers are very simple to install and provide lighting control that closely resembles that of a dimmer switch. Lamp dimmers are available in a variety of styles, but they all use the same basic technology of controlling the flow of electricity to the light bulb to manipulate the brightness. This control usually consists of a slider switch, rotating dial, or touch-sensitive pad. They can be incorporated into specialty screw-in sockets, extension cords, and even remote-control units that plug into the wall outlet. You can find lamp dimmers at most hardware and home improvement stores.

    Flexible-Stem Lamps

    • Flexible-stem lamps allow you to direct the lighting for desired brightness.

Dimming of light is not only achieved by controlling the flow of electricity but also by adjusting the direction. Flexible-stem lamps allow you to point the lamp head in an any direction. When you're reading or in need of brighter light, bend the flexible stem to point the light in the direction of your work. When it's time to use your computer or watch a movie, point the light toward the wall or ceiling. You can create dramatic lighting effects when using flexible-stem floor lamps with multiple lamp heads. Floor lamps are most often found with either three or five lamp heads and desk or tabletop flexible-stem lamps usually have a single bulb. Most models will accept either incandescent or compact fluorescent bulbs.

    Track Lighting

    • Track lighting is available in many different styles and the complexity of installation varies widely. The most complex styles can require the assistance of a licensed electrician. However, the simplest styles can be plugged into any standard electrical outlet, just like a lamp. Track lighting consists of multiple light sockets and bulbs on a "track." You can slide each socket along the track to the desired location. Each socket can also be rotated and pointed in a range of directions to provide the desired lighting effects and brightness levels. Indoor flood and spot lights are commonly used in track lighting.
