Incandescent Lighting Alternatives

The first viable incandescent lighting system was created by Thomas Edison and has been in use for more than 100 years. However, recent technological advances to the light bulb allow energy-efficient options for lighting that not only help the environment, but also lower costs over time. There are several options available to replace the incandescent light bulb.
  1. Halogen Lights

    • Halogen lights are one option available for consumers. They are very bright, often as bright or brighter than incandescent lighting options, and about 30 percent more efficient than incandescent lighting, according to ABS Alaskan. Because halogen bulbs use full spectrum lighting, they do not strain the eyes. They use regular light fixtures and do not require adaptation for the bulb to work properly.

    Fluorescent Lights

    • Fluorescent lights, which come in tubes and bulbs, are much more energy efficient than incandescent and halogen lights, but are limited because they require adaptations for the lighting. Regular fluorescent fixtures are primarily used in public locations and are a bright lighting option. However, compact fluorescent bulbs fit in regular lighting fixtures.

    LED Lights

    • LED, or light emitting diode, lights are another option for replacing the incandescent light bulb. The bulb is one of the most energy efficient while providing strong light and a durable, long-lasting lighting source. The lights are higher costing initially, but can last up to 50,000 hours, according to LED Lighting Online. The lights are not only long-lasting, but are also cool to the touch.

    Considerations

    • When buying alternative lighting, there are some considerations to make. One of the biggest decisions is color. Alternative lighting is available in a variety of colors, including white, amber, blue, red and green.

Another consideration is the energy efficiency. All of the alternatives have lower energy costs compared with incandescent lights. However, initial cost and budget also should be considered.
