Examine the fixture cover. If it's clear, it allows the light from the bulb to transmit directly. This has the same effect as if you have a bare bulb exposed. The only difference is that the fixture adds a more finished look.
Choose a new fixture to install over your light bulb. The new fixture should have frosted or opaque glass in order to filter the light and achieve a softer look.
Remove the old fixture and replace it with the frosted or opaque glass fixture.
Find a replacement bulb that produces soft light, such as a diffused LED bulb with dimples. This bulb will bathe an outdoor area -- such as a porch -- in soft light. If you prefer another type of light bulb, such as incandescent or compact fluorescent lamp (CFL), look for one labeled for both outdoor use and soft light.
Twist the current light bulb counterclockwise to unscrew it from the socket.
Insert the base of the new light bulb into the fixture's socket and turn it clockwise to fasten it.
