A DIY Round Hanging Lampshade

A light fixture can change the look and feel of a room. There is no reason to chuck out your old hanging lamp when a simple do-it-yourself project can add years to the lamp's lifespan. A decorative lampshade can pull the colors of a room together, set off a specific area or breathe new life into an old lamp.

  • Hanging lampshade frame
  • Fabric marker or chalk
  • Fabric
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue
  • Hot glue gun
  • Ribbon, 1-inch thick
  • Tassels, beads or decorations

Instructions

      Lay your fabric out on a flat surface and place the lampshade frame on the fabric. Mark the size of the frame on fabric with the fabric marker or chalk. Stretch the fabric around the frame and mark the fabric to indicate the size the shade should be. Hanging lampshade frames can be purchased at most craft stores. Thrift stores and resale shops made also have old lampshades that can be disassembled for the frame.

      Add 1 inch to the width and length of the fabric, then mark the new measurements. This is to account for the fabric that will wrap around the sides of the lampshade frame.

      Cut the fabric to the new measurements. Make the cuts as straight as possible.

      Plug in the hot glue gun and allow it enough time to heat up the glue stick.

      Lay the fabric out flat and lay the fame on the fabric. Start at with the bottom edge and wrap ½-inch of material over the frame. Add a small amount of hot glue to the back of the wrapped fabric. Hold the fabric down over the frame for five seconds for the glue to start adhering the two fabrics together.

      Work around the bottom, gluing the fabric around the frame. Repeat this process around the top of the frame.

      Apply hot glue around the bottom rim of the lampshade and apply the ribbon to the shade. This will not only hide any crooked cuts, it will also add accent to the frame. Apply another ring of glue around the top and add ribbon along the upper edge.

      Decorate the lampshade with beads, jewels, tassels and glitter if desired. Simply add glue to the back of the decorations and add them to the lamp.
