How to Use an Exterior Light Inside

Sometimes, trying to find the right light fixture can seem impossible. However, the answer to your lighting woes may just be waiting for you in the exterior light aisle at your local home improvement store. Exterior lights tend to be a little larger in scale. Because they are of an exterior quality, they can be the perfect answer to basement, laundry room and bathroom applications. Their finishes range from shiny brass to muted copper, which makes them easily adaptable to nearly every decor. Using an exterior light inside is an easy task. The result is a lighting application decision made outside of the proverbial decorating box.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the breaker that supplies electricity to the light you will be installing. Turn that breaker to the off position. Test that the electricity has been turned off by using an electric voltage tester.

    • 2

Remove the existing light from the wall or ceiling.

    • 3

Locate the new fixture's mounting bar. Secure the mounting bar to the electrical outlet box with a screwdriver and the outlet box screws removed from the old lighting application.

    • 4

Position the new light fixture so that it is supported and not hanging freely while installing. Use a helper if needed to support the light and keep the weight off of the wiring until the light is installed.

    • 5

Locate the included hexagonal nut. Place the nut upon the threaded nipple protruding from the lighting fixture. Rotate the nut with your fingers in a clockwise fashion until 3 threads of the nipple are exposed above the nut.

    • 6

Locate the center hole in the mounting bar. Place the threaded nipple into the hole and turn in a clockwise fashion using your fingers. Turn the attached nut with your fingers to secure the nipple in place.

    • 7

Locate the screw collar attached to the light pendant. Attach the screw collar to the nipple by turning it in a clockwise fashion with your fingers.

    • 8

Ensure that the chain is attached to the top of the light fixture. If not, open one chain link at the location closest to the top of the light fixture with a pair of pliers. Connect the open chain link to the top of the light fixture.

    • 9

Slip the included screw collar ring and then the light canopy over the chain.

    • 10

Open one chain link, using a pair of pliers, at the end opposite of the first chain link you opened. Attach the open chain link to the previously installed screw collar, which is attached to the threaded nipple.

    • 11

Close all open chain links with a pair of pliers.

    • 12

Locate the electrical wiring on the pendant light. Thread the wiring through the installed chain links, skipping every other chain link.

    • 13

Connect the included green grounding screw to the dimpled protruding area of the installed mounting bar using a screwdriver.

    • 14

Locate the black wire on the light fixture and protruding from the electrical outlet box. Attach the light's black wire to the black wire protruding from the electrical outlet box. While holding the wires together, connect them using a wire nut. Place the wire nut over the tops of the wires and turn the wire nut in a clockwise rotation.

    • 15

Locate the white wire on the light fixture and protruding from the electrical outlet box. Attach the light's white wire to the white wire protruding from the electrical outlet box. While holding the wires together, connect them using a wire nut. Place the wire nut over the tops of the wires and turn the wire nut in a clockwise rotation.

    • 16

Locate the bare copper wire on the light fixture and protruding from the electrical outlet box. Attach the light's bare copper wire to the bare copper wire protruding from the electrical outlet box. While holding the wires together, twist them together. Use a pair of pliers to turn the wires until they resemble a small hook. Place this hook beneath the grounding screw located on the mounting bar. Use a screwdriver to tighten the screw over the hooked wires to secure them into place.

    • 17

Carefully tuck all wires into the electrical outlet box. Lift the light's canopy by sliding it over the chain links. Place the canopy against the ceiling. The screw collar will now be protruding from the canopy.

    • 18

Slip the screw collar ring over the chain links. Attach it to the protruding screw collar by twisting the screw collar in a clockwise fashion with your fingers.

    • 19

Place the light's glass cover up against the bottom of the canopy. Attach the glass cover using the included retaining ring.

    • 20

Install a UL-approved light bulb into the light fixture.

    • 21

Restore power by turning the breaker back on. Check to ensure that your newly installed light is working properly.
