Sketch a design. The first step toward creating a nice primitive hanging lamp is to visualize it on paper. Does it need to look like an oil lamp or will it have a tin lampshade? What sort of designs or etchings will it have?
Choose a base fixture. Your lamp, though primitive, will need to hang from the ceiling, a beam or another structural element, and it will also need to work with modern electricity. You will need a base to which you will attach your lampshade, and you can find such structures at your local home improvement store. To keep it looking primitive, choose something with an aged bronze or silver look.
Design the lampshade. Whatever kind of lamp you choose to create, the lampshade is what will give your project its primitive look. Are you going to go for a metallic theme? You could use a simple old tin can and use a nail to make holes in it for the light to escape. If you want a canvas look, it may be good to find a lampshade made out of this material and add some character to it by artificially aging it.
Attach the lampshade securely to your base. Also make sure that if your shade is potentially flammable that it will not come in contact with your bulb.
