Lighting Options for Tall Ceilings

Today's designers are building residential spaces with higher ceilings, including vaulted designs that require special lighting for this distinctive space. High ceilings can be energized with exaggerated lighting or subtle up-lighting in quieter rooms.
  1. Adjustable Pendant Lighting

    • High ceilings can present big challenges in lighting but at the same time they open you up to many design possibilities. If the high ceiling is in a smaller room, such as a reading room or office, then lighting at a lower height would be preferable. A pendant light with adjustable height would work perfectly for this space.

    Size

    • A room used for entertaining that is a high-traffic area requires a design that hangs high and is a show-stopper; a chandelier is an excellent choice. This lighting option should not hang any closer than 7 feet from the floor, and the size of the chandelier must be taken into consideration. Larger rooms require larger fixtures for the most effective lighting.

    Direct Lighting

    • Wall sconces can be used for direct lighting onto certain walking areas or as up-lighting to reflect and bounce back off the ceiling. Sconces work well on stairs and narrow walkways. For flexible sconce lighting, install lighting with a gooseneck design so you can direct lighting to wherever you want.
