How to Convert Microcandelas to Lumens

There are a number of ways in which light is measured and corresponding units for this purpose. Two of them are the microcandela and the lumen which, in simple terms, relate to the light emitted by a source and the light incident on a surface. The microcandela value emitted and the incident lumen value are related, and the number of lumens can be calculated from the number of microcandelas.

     Calculate the value of the apex angle divided by 2.

     Calculate the cosine of the result of Step 1.

     Subtract the result of Step 2 from 1.0.

     Multiply the result of Step 3 by 2π (π = pi, the mathematical constant).

     Divide the number of microcandelas by 1,000,000 to give the number of candelas.

   • 6

     Multiply the value obtained in Step 4 by the number of candelas obtained in Step 5 to give the equivalent number of lumens.
