How to Mount Wall Sconces

Add the warmth of candle lighting to your rooms with wall sconces. You can mount wall sconces on any wall in your house to add the soft glow of candlelight or simply to achieve a traditional look for a room. It is important to mount the sconce to a wall stud so that it will not pull out of the wall. Wall studs are the structural framing boards within the wall. They are spaced a standard 16 inches on center, so you won't have to worry about finding one near the spot where you want the sconce.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide a stud finder along the wall in the general area where you would like to mount the sconce. Mark the nearest stud with a pencil at the height that you want to mount the sconce.

    • 2

Place the sconce on a work surface with the back side facing up. Center the paper over the back of the sconce. Trace the outline of the back onto the paper with a pencil. Punch a hole through the paper at each of the mounting holes. Remove the paper from the back of the sconce.

    • 3

Align the mounting holes in the paper over the stud marking on the wall. Mark the location of the mounting holes onto the wall.

    • 4

Drive the screws included with the sconce into the wall at each mounting hole mark with a screw gun. Leave the screws sticking approximately 1/8 inch out from the wall. This will allow the mounting holes to slide over the screws to hold the sconce in place.

    • 5

Lift the sconce and position it against the wall so the holes line up with the screws. Lower the sconce onto the screws to secure the sconce to the wall.
