How to do Home Lighting

Lighting is one of the most important aspects of interior design. If a room is poorly lit, beautiful furniture, carpet and wall coverings will not stand out. The American Lighting Association identifies three types of light for the home: ambient, task and accent. (See Reference 1) Ambient light, or general lighting, is used in most rooms of your house. It also best describes the lights used outside. Task lighting helps you to better accomplish a task. Accent lighting is the most specific and usually the brightest. It may be used to highlight a work of art.

Instructions

  1. Preparation and Planning

    • 1

Decide which rooms are to be re-lit and calculate a budget for each room.

    • 2

As you walk through the room, write down the primary type of lighting the room needs. For example, if you're in the kitchen you'll need task lighting and ambient lighting.

    • 3

Use the tape measure and step ladder to see how much room you have for fixtures that you will want to place on ceilings, walls or under cabinets.

    • 4

For table lamp choices, measure the distance from the table to your eye level. Table lamps should have the bulb at or near eye level.

    • 5

For a floor lamp, consider how it will be used and then measure for the optimum height. A lamp that will be used to light a corner will usually be taller than one that will be next to a reading chair.

    • 6

Calculate the number of each type of lamp you will use and go shopping.
