What Types of Lightbulbs Can Be Used With Dimmers?

Although you can use regular light bulbs with dimmers, they will not accommodate dimming features. For light bulbs that dim, there are several options such as spirals, "A" shapes and indoor reflector lights. Every light and lighting fixture may have limitations or require specific bulbs. To pick the right bulb for your dimmer, check your specifications.
  1. Spiral Bulbs

    • Spiral bulbs are the most popular bulbs used for dimmer lights --- such as the Energy Star Dimming Spiral. These bulbs can be bought as compact fluorescent, regular incandescent or energy saving. Not all spiral bulbs are compatible with every dimmer so check your light specifications.

    A Shape

    • Another dimming bulb is the "A" shape; these are fuller bulbs that give off more light than a spiral. The A shape comes in compact fluorescent, regular incandescent and energy saving. These bulbs are made for all kinds of lighting and lighting fixtures. Since this bulb is popular and has many types, be sure to get a dimmer, such as the Westinghouse Compact A Shape Bulb.

    Indoor Reflector

    • Indoor reflector lights are much smaller bulbs that provide softer light. These bulbs are made to be compatible with dimmers too. Reflector lights can be bright as an outdoor reflector, or as soft and yellow as a floor light --- such as in a movie theater. These bulbs are chosen for their energy efficiency and easy reflection on the eyes.

    Lamps

    • Just as with lights and fixtures, lamp specifications vary. Usually, lamps with dimmer features can use any kind of light bulb, but compact fluorescent is most recommended for lamps with dimmer switches. For lamps, you may be able to use spirals, A shapes, and indoor reflectors, but compact fluorescent lights will fit better and will last longer than other kinds.
