Ideas for Draped Lights in a Teen's Bedroom

Lighting is one area normally overlooked in the design process by many, yet it is invaluable for ambiance and mood. Bring both to your teens' bedroom by draping lights in addition to the task lighting needed for homework. Draping lights come in a wide variety of styles, giving you plenty of options to suit the teen's design sense.
  1. Types

    • Determine the type of draped lighting you want to use in the bedroom as a strand of twinkle lights gives a different effect than an oriental lantern. Rope strands give you a substantial casing while twinkle lights allow for flexibility in design formation. Both strands give you options as to bulb colors. Other draped lighting options include votive lighting, with live-burning candles or LED ones, and specialty string lighting, such as hearts, stars, pumpkins or other holiday themed lighting.

    Placement

    • Place the lights throughout the room for different effects. A ceiling gives ample opportunity for all types of draped lighting while a four poster bed may work best with a strand of rope or twinkle lights. Corners scream for the illumination of draping lights, which work well with a group of hanging votives or an oriental lantern. Shelves and the tops of furniture give you areas to drape lights as does the wall, windows and entrance to the room.

    Methods

    • Although you could just run the lights around the room, drape the lights in a variety of ways and create more visual interest inside the room. For example, create a swag effect with the rope strands and twinkle lights as you attach them to the ceiling or the wall. Place LED votive candles into different hanging baskets, and arrange them along the top of a window, or highlight a collection on a shelf by weaving rope lights through it.

    Embellishments

    • Bring more style to your drape lighting by embellishing the lights. Although twinkle lights on their own give a soft glow when wrapped within a colorful piece of tulle (an inexpensive type of netting) the resulting glow picks up the color. Or drape the twinkle lights or a rope strand around or next to a mirror and not only will you get a nice shimmer effect but the light glow will be bounced around the room.
