Making Roller Shades

There are many kinds of windows, each calling for a different type of shade. While many home windows are covered by drapes that hang from the ceiling to the floor, offices typically use roller shades. Roller shades are useful because they look neat and tidy. Customize your office by making your own roller shade. The process will take, at most, an afternoon.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the brackets from the clutch kit above your window frame. Mark where the holes go with a pencil and use the hammer to drive nails through the holes. Hook the brackets up on the nails.

    • 2

Measure your window frame from side to side. Subtract a little less than 1/2 of an inch from the width on both sides. That will be your final width. Your final height is the distance from the bracket to the bottom of your frame plus 1/2 an inch.

    • 3

Draw a line with the pencil 1 inch from the bottom of the roll of shade cloth. Pull out shade cloth equal to your final length plus 1 inch -- the extra inch is a margin trimming -- and cut the cloth from the roll in a straight line with scissors. Cut the cloth to suit the width with an additional inch.

    • 4

Roll the lint brush along the inside of the shade cloth. Pour glue on the inside of the cloth. Use the rollers to apply paint evenly to the whole cloth. Roll until there are no bubbles left in the glue.

    • 5

Lay your fabric on to the side of the shade cloth with the adhesive. Run your hands systematically over the fabric until there are no bubbles between the shade and the fabric. Cut across the line you drew in step 3. Measure the shades and trim off any extra width or length with the scissors.

    • 6

Apply fringe adhesive to the bottom 1 1/2 inch of the shades. Lay the slab from the kit across the bottom. Fold the shade up so that the slab is held between the shade's folds. Press down firmly until the adhesive can hold the slab to the shades.

    • 7

Glue your shades to the roller. Make sure that the patterned side of the fabric is facing the direction you wish it to -- in most cases, the patterned fabric should face inside. Follow the instructions on the kit and assemble the clutch. Attach the roller to the clutch with the kit instructions. Attach the clutch to the frame on the wall.
