How to Re-Do Lampshades

Redoing a lampshade will give your room a bright new focal point. Choose fabric that is patterned, bright and flashy; or alternately, look for subdued, dark tones to give a dimmer, more relaxed feeling to an area of your home. Re-covering an existing lamp is a fairly simple do-it-yourself project that is much less expensive than purchasing a new lamp. Updating your lamp with a different fabric can give new life to an older, out-of-date piece.

Things You'll Need

  • Fabric, amount determined by size of pattern
  • Paper (use craft paper, butcher paper or recycled paper)
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Can of spray adhesive
  • Bottle of fabric glue
  • Ruler

Instructions

  1. Simple Lampshade Makeover: Preparing the Pattern

    • 1
A new lampshade can add a modern touch to your bedroom.

Unplug the lamp that you are going to redo. Remove the existing shade from the lamp by unscrewing the bulb and fastener, if it has one. To do this project, leave the existing fabric in place. You will fasten the new fabric to the existing shade and frame.

    • 2

Lay the pattern paper on a flat surface and trace the lampshade by placing it on its side, slowly rotating it over the paper to get its measurement. Trace a line at the top as you roll, then return to the original position, and trace the bottom line of the shade. The line may be curved or straight depending on the existing pattern. The pattern will curve around if the top of the shade is smaller than the bottom. Because of the ease of making the pattern, the simplest shades to recover are the same size on the top and bottom.

    • 3

Add 1 inch to the top and bottom of the pattern using a ruler. This will allow enough fabric to be folded over, both at the top and bottom of the lampshade.

    • 4

Use the ruler to create a straight line from the top to the bottom where the shade will meet. Add 1 inch, which will later overlap.

    • 5

Cut out the pattern, including the 1 inch added seam allowance on the top, bottom and side of the pattern.

    Adding New Fabric

    • 6

Choose a fabric that will add zip to your outdated shade and will also cover the existing shade so it won't show through. For this reason, it is easier to cover a plain lampshade than one with a wildly bold pattern.

    • 7

Pin the pattern to the fabulous fabric of your choice. Cut out the fabric to the size of the pattern with shears. Remove pins and pattern paper.

    • 8
Add ribbon to the top and bottom of the shade.

Spray the reverse of the fabric with adhesive.

    • 9

Line up the edge of the fabric with enough to fold over on the top and bottom. Work carefully as you attach the new fabric to the shade. Stretch and press it on to avoid wrinkling.

    • 10

When you have covered the whole shade, fold the sides under and glue them with fabric glue (or use a glue gun). Fold over the top and bottom seams and glue. Wait for it to dry, then enjoy your newly made-over lamp.
