Measure the height of the columns. Select an uplight that can illuminate at least two-thirds the height of the column.
Position the uplight on the front side of the column and angle the light to wash as high on the column as you desire. Because most columns are arranged in pairs, it is important to install and adjust the uplights on all front-facing columns at the same time so the lights can be adjusted to the same angle and presentation.
Lock the light into position once the angle has been set, using the locking mechanism built into the pivoting armature of the base. It is important to view the columns lit up after dark to be certain the lighting appears balanced. Some columns can look different based on other conditions in the environment that may be overlooked during initial installation.
Backlight the columns by installing ceiling light fixtures of a higher or stronger light to shine down behind the front rows of columns. This will add to the drama of the columns, as the top front will be shadowed and backlit while the front bottoms will be illuminated and uplit.
