Proper Lighting Levels

Lighting levels change throughout the house depending on the use or function of the space. What works well in a kitchen may not work at all for an office or living room. Consider the different types of lighting and the use of your space, then decide what lighting level works best.
  1. High Activity Areas

    • High action areas such as the kitchen or family room require well-lit spaces with both general and task lighting. Task lighting can use track or pendant lights; general or ambient lighting is best completed with recessed lighting that can be installed throughout the ceiling.

    Quiet Spaces

    • The best lighting levels for smaller rooms such as an office or bedroom are task or direct lighting. Bright overhead lights are not necessary. Direct lighting can be accomplished with desk lamps or track lighting. Pendant lights designed to hang over areas such as work tables or desks are excellent choices for this space. Hallways and entry areas need lower levels of light, making sconces or wall lights a good option.

    Entertainment Rooms

    • When choosing lighting for a family room, basement or entertainment room, choose lighting that brightens the whole space. These are high activity areas and as such should have lighting that corresponds to this level. Choose lighting such as chandeliers or track lighting.
