# How to Light a Decorative Gas Fire
While most standard fireplaces work by burning wood logs and/or paper, or through a gas line, decorative gas fireplaces provide some warmth but are not as large or functional as a traditional fireplace. The units are sold in many home retail or hardware stores and must be professionally installed for proper use and function. Turning on the fireplace once installed is fairly simple, and can often be done through more than one method.

Pilot Light

Open the access panel and turn the control knob to "Off." Allow 5 minutes so that gas can clear the lines before moving forward.

Press and turn the control knob to "Pilot" while pressing the red button to ignite the pilot light.

Wait 30 seconds to 1 minute and then let go of the red button.

Turn the control knob to "On" once the fireplace is lit.
Remote Control

Turn the fireplace on by pressing the "Power" or "On/Off" button.

Press the desired fireplace mode. Most remote controls have up or down arrows to change the thermostat temperature or a "Smart" or "Regular" mode to light the fireplace at a set point.

Press the "Power" button or "On/Off" to turn the fireplace off when finished.
