Display Shelving With Accent Lighting

Accent lighting can highlight items you want to showcase on a display shelf. As varied as the items you may showcase, the accent lighting option can work for most displays, although some displays may work better with certain types of lighting. Consider the heat the accent light emits and whether there will be shadows on your objects when choosing the lighting for your shelves.
  1. LED Strip Lighting

    • LED (light-emitting diode) strip lighting brings a consistent stream of light to your cabinet display. Thin enough to slide into the edge of the shelf itself, you can apply these lights horizontally or vertically to the cabinet. The strips contain several small lights that emit low-voltage light. When paired together, it creates one strong beam on light, but without producing the heat for glares or shadows on the display items. Light choices include either white or color light, and the strip is fully adjustable as you can cut it to fit the shelf.

    Rope Strand

    • Rope strand lights give you many styling options as an accent light for your display shelf. Rope lights contain lights within a long, plastic, flexible tube. You can attach the tube to the perimeter of the shelf holding the display items or to the underside of the shelf above it. Another option is wrapping the strand of lights within the display items. Rope strand lights come in LED options and the tubes come in a variety of colors from clear to stripes.

    Puck Lights

    • Puck lights provide spot lighting for a display shelf. These lights come in a variety of shapes and finishes ranging from brushed aluminum to white, yet are shallow enough lights that you can recess mount them to the underside of the shelf above if you want to hide the light. One advantage to puck lighting is the ability to move the light so you can angle the light to hit the display item its maximum advantage. Types of puck lights include LED, xenon or halogen.

    Flexible Lights

    • Flexible lights allow you to mount them in shelving units, cabinets or ceilings. These lights require a hole for the installation process as the fixture slides through the hole and attaches to the display through a heavy nut on the other side of the hole. The lights operate through a remote transformer, which allows you to switch them on and off as needed. These lights get close to the display items and can be used to either up-light them or low-light them.
