How to Make Fluorescent Light More Attractive

Fluorescent lights produce light by sending a current through a tube that contains phosphor and a small amount of mercury gas. Fluorescent lights use less energy than incandescent and halogen lights and also last longer. Although today's fluorescent lights are more attractive than the greenish, flickering lights used decades ago, some fluorescent lights aren't as attractive as incandescent or halogen lights. Improve the appearance and mood of a room by choosing fluorescent lights carefully.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose fluorescent lights that have a color rendering index (CRI) of at least 80. CRI refers to how accurately the light provides illumination. Low CRIs provide unflattering, ugly light. CRIs above 90 are even better, but they're less energy efficient. CRI information is included on the package; any Energy Star fluorescent light has a CRI of 80 or higher.

    • 2

Determine whether you want the lights to have a cool, bluish appearance or a warm, golden appearance and choose the appropriate type of fluorescent lamp. Warmer colors feel more relaxing, but cooler colors may promote productivity and reveal colors better.

    • 3

Layer different types of lights. For example, use a compact fluorescent bulb in a table lamp for task lighting and use linear fluorescent tubes for overhead ambient lighting.
