How to Install an Art Glass Pendant Light

If your old light fixture seems dated, a new art glass pendant will give your room an instant face-lift. Whether the light is on or off, Murano glass shimmers and attracts attention. Because of the fragile nature of blown glass, avoid knocking the shade against hard surfaces during and after installation. If you're putting the light above an island, table or vanity, allow a minimum of 30 inches between the bottom of the pendant and the countertop. Handle the shade with care every time you change the bulb; if the glass swings and hits another pendant, the shade will shatter.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the power supply for the light fixture at the breaker box. Flip the light switch to confirm that you cut the power, or use a circuit tester. If multiple switches control the fixture, double-check each switch.

    • 2

Remove the existing light fixture. Unscrew the wire nuts that connect the power supply to the fixture. Remove any extra hardware, including supplementary brackets.

    • 3

Install the flat mounting bar with the screws provided, if the manufacturer included a bar.

    • 4

Connect the power supply wires to the wires of your new fixture. White connects to white and black connects to black. The green ground wire connects either to the incoming ground wire or to the grounding screw on the mounting bar provided. Twist the wires together slightly; cap with the included wire nuts. No bare wiring should be showing, except perhaps the green ground wire.

    • 5

Examine your light to ensure that your glass shade is detached from the fixture to prevent breakage during installation. Attach your new fixture to the ceiling box using the screws provided in the package. Push the excess wires up into the ceiling box.

    • 6

Adjust the length of the cord to your preferred height and mount the cover plate. Depending on your specific model, you may need to mount the cover plate by screwing a decorative cap onto the fixture. Do not over-tighten the cap.

    • 7

Insert the bulb and attach the glass shade, handling with care.

    • 8

Turn the power supply back on at the breaker box. Flip the light switch on to test the wiring connections. If the light does not function, double-check your wiring connections. If the light remains inoperable and the circuit breaker is on, you may have a defective light.
