How Does LED Under-Counter Lighting Work?

LED lighting is a popular option for people who want to update the lighting in their homes -- especially under-counter spaces. Since LED lighting is environmentally friendly and comparable in overall cost to incandescent and fluorescent lighting, many people are seeing the practicality of using this light source solution. In addition, since LED lighting allows for more creativity, people are using light sources in new and unique ways.
  1. LED Lighting

    • Incandescent lighting and fluorescent lighting are currently the most commonly used types of lighting sources, especially within households. However, light emitting diodes are becoming very popular because they are more efficient and last longer than other light sources. In addition, incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs expel a large amount of heat as a byproduct. LEDs expel very little heat, thus are safer as a result. This makes them an excellent choice when evaluating what you need for under cabinet space.

    Different Types of LED Lighting

    • There are two different types of LED lighting that you would want to use for under-counter spaces: linear and puck lighting. Linear lighting has several LED lamps lined up in a row, similar to a fluorescent or incandescent lamp. Puck lighting is several LED lamps placed within a circular fixture. Should you choose to use LED lighting, you will need to install the fixtures appropriate for the type of LED lighting you choose. These fixtures will have several LED lamps within them. These lamps can be one of two types, the first being small five mm lamps. The other type of lamp is a high-powered lamp. If you have a large amount of under-counter space that you want the fixtures to cover, you will want to choose linear fixtures. Puck lighting would be best for smaller under-counter spaces. The choice between 5mm lamps and high powered lamps should be made when you decide what strength of lighting you need underneath the cabinet or counter area.

    Advantages

    • LED lighting lasts much longer than incandescent or fluorescent lighting. For example, an LED fixture may last longer than 10 years before needing replacement, while a comparable incandescent bulb will needs replacement about every two years. This makes the operating cost of LED lighting cheaper overall, especially when compared to incandescent and fluorescent lighting. LEDs are also more energy efficient, provide minimum infrared and ultraviolet radiation, and are relatively cool to the touch. Since LED lights are smaller than the comparable incandescent or fluorescent bulb, you can use them for applications that are more creative. This, in particular, will allow you to light your under-counter space in a number of different ways.

    Disadvantages

    • LED lights have a shorter lifespan in high temperature areas. LED lights that are located under counters are typically in enclosed spaces that will generally stay warmer than the rest of the room. Currently, LED lights also have a higher purchase price initially, but this is expected to drop over time. Product packaging may not state the light output of the light source. You may have to compare different fixtures in a show room to ensure you are purchasing the right product. In addition, if an LED bulb goes out in a light fixture, you will probably have to replace the entire fixture. This may be a hassle in the tight spaces typical of under-counter lighting.
