How to Cover Old Light Fixtures

Old light fixtures are not always pleasant to see. They might not go with your room style, or are chipped or broken. If you cannot afford to purchase a new fixture at the moment, it doesn't mean you have to continue to look at the old fixture. You can adjust its appearance in several ways that will make it look more updated.

Instructions

    • 1

Pin a handkerchief to the outside of the light fixture. Pin it up with straight pins at each corner. Select a stylish square handkerchief that fits with the decor of the room. The material should not touch the bulb.

    • 2

Tape lace or decorative paper to the outer edges of the fixture and let it hang down. Use stencils to create a design in the paper and cut it out before hanging it up.

    • 3

Pin a paper Japanese umbrella over the fixture for a unique look. Cut off the handle. The umbrella is light enough to stay up with pins or staples.

    • 4

Paint the fixture with a color of your choice. Coat it with a primer first, brushing it into all the crevices. Let the primer dry, then apply the paint.

    • 5

Undo a hanging fixture from the chain and slide a lampshade on the chain. Reattach the light fixture and let the shade slide down over the light.
