How to Light Walls

Whether you are dealing with an area in your home that is too dark or you want to highlight works of art, you can light walls with the use of sconces. There are many varieties of sconces. Some must be hard-wired and will require an electrician to complete the job while others have discrete cords that can be plugged into nearby outlets. Unless you are a certified electrician, you should never hard-wire anything in your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the outlets in the room. Sconces should be hung directly above these outlets or located close to them so the plug will reach. Make a small pencil mark where you want the scones hung. If hanging more than one on a wall, use a yardstick to make sure that they are evenly hung.

    • 2

Paint the cord of the sconce to match your wall color. Take a small brush and carefully paint the power cord of the sconce. Give this paint a few hours to dry before proceeding. Paint both the front and back of the cord.

    • 3

Hang the sconces. Using a screwdriver or drill, attach the back plate of the sconce to the wall. While you can use adhesives to hold a sconce up, it is better to hard install it into the wall.

    • 4

Tap in wall staples over the power cord of the sconce. This will help hold the cord in place. Do not puncture the power cord. Make sure the staples are wide enough to fit the cord. Use a hammer and carefully tap in a staple over the cord every 6 inches.

Plug in the sconce. Double check to make sure you did not puncture the power cord before you plug in the sconce. Once you do, turn the sconce on to make sure it works.
