How to Solve Fluorescent Light Glare

Fluorescent lights are lighting alternatives that are said to be more efficient than their traditional counterparts -- the incandescent bulbs. However, glare is an inherent characteristic of light. Although fluorescent lights are created to produce less glare than incandescent bulbs, the light from these sources can still be too intense at times, especially when it plays with the reflective surfaces of the objects within the visual field. For most people, this glare is only mildly irritating. People with weak eyes, or those who are sensitive to light, however, may experience extreme discomfort when they are exposed to glare. You can avoid these negative effects through fluorescent light glare-reduction techniques.

Instructions

  1. Light Filters

    • 1

Research the different types of light filters available for your fluorescent bulb. Purchase filters from your neighborhood hardware stores.

    • 2

Test your shade of choice by using a similar light bulb in the store. Check to see if the shade reduces the amount of illumination provided by the bulb, and buy one that suits your needs.

    • 3

Remove your fluorescent bulb from your light fixture. Also, clean the fixture and the bulb itself.

    • 4

Wrap the fluorescent bulb with the filter.

    • 5

Reinstall the light bulb, and check to see if the glare is lessened without affecting the quality of illumination.

    Light Panels

    • 6

Measure the dimensions of your light fixture.

    • 7

Visit your nearby hardware store or specialty lighting shop to look for light panels that can fit your light fixture. Keep in mind that illumination is still important.

    • 8

Make any necessary adjustments on the area of the light fixture to fit the light panel over the fluorescent bulb.

    • 9

Install the light panel and test whether the amount of light provided by your fluorescent bulb is adequate for the location.

    • 10

Change the light panel with a lighter or darker variant to suit the room's lighting requirements.
