Light Fixture Hanging Height

Hanging light fixtures come in a variety of styles and price points, making them a favorite choice of homeowners. They can be used anywhere and perform a wide range of lighting jobs. Hanging lights provide task lighting in the kitchen, accent lighting in the dining room, ambient lighting in the living room and decorative lighting for entrances and bathrooms. When selecting hanging lights, follow height suggestions that pertain to each fixture type.
  1. Chandeliers

    • Chandeliers, elaborate hanging light fixtures, feature individual bulbs attached to multiple branches. Contemporary, ornate or romantic in nature, chandeliers create instant drama in a room. Chandeliers should hang between 30 and 34 inches over a table in a dining area with standard 8-foot high ceilings. Even homes with soaring ceilings can accommodate a chandelier. Simply add 3 inches of chandelier height per foot of ceiling height. Chandeliers provide a striking focal point when hung in foyers. In this location, the base of the chandelier should be suspended at least 7 feet from the floor.

    Pendants

    • Pendants and mini pendants have become a hot lighting trend and with good reason. Their clean lines look right at home in traditional and contemporary interiors. Pendants, commonly used in the kitchen, focus direct light over islands, peninsulas and breakfast bars. They also come a variety of designs, colors and textures that make them a stylish alternative to recessed lighting. Position pendant lights between 30 to 40 inches above working or eating surfaces for optimum illumination.

    Billiard Lighting

    • Don't forget the game room when considering hanging light fixtures. Bright overhead fixtures may suffice; however, many billiards enthusiasts prefer specialized hanging lights. Hanging billiard fixtures typically consist of two to four bulbs to provide a shadow and glare-free playing surface. The recommended hanging height for billiard lights is 32 inches from the shade base to the table surface. Some billiard fixtures feature height adjustment capabilities to further customize table illumination.

    Outdoor Applications

    • Homes with grand entries, porte cocheres and high porch ceilings can easily carry off oversize hanging light fixtures. Hanging lantern fixtures safely light the way for guests and add to a home's overall curb appeal. Just ensure the light hangs at least 84 inches from the ground or just above the front door opening. Install hanging decorative fixtures in outdoor entertaining spaces, such as covered patios and pool cabanas. Follow the same 84-inch height rule for these outdoor applications. Always purchase outdoor fixtures rated for use in damp areas.

    Considerations

    • Height guidelines for hanging light fixtures serve only as suggestions, not hard and fast rules. Always consider tall family members and frequent guests when determining the height of light fixtures located in main household traffic areas.
