How to Install a Plug in a Chandelier

Most chandeliers are hard-wired into a house's wiring and controlled by a wall switch. But if you want to install a chandelier in a spot that doesn't have existing wiring, your options are more limited. One thing you can do is to add a plug to your chandelier. With some basic tools and materials you can do this job in an afternoon.

Wire cutters/strippers
Extension cord
Drill
Wire nuts
Electrical tape

  Turn off the power to the circuit the chandelier is connected to at the circuit breaker panel.

  Remove the screw(s) or bolt(s) holding the mount cover. The mount cover is at the ceiling end of the chandelier, covering the wiring and mounting screws. Lower it out of the way.

  Pull the wires out of the ceiling mounting box as far as possible. If the chandelier is connected to the home wiring with wire nuts, twist these to the left to remove them. If not, cut the wires as far back into the box as possible. Wrap electrical tape around the cut-off wires remaining in the box.

  Cut the outlet end off an extension cord. Pull apart the two leads and remove 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of each wire.

  Drill a hole in the side of the mount cover. Insert the end of the extension cord wire into the hole. Pair the wires of the extension cord with the wires of the chandelier and slide wire nuts over each pair. Twist the nuts to the right to tighten them and wrap electrical tape around the base of each nut.
