Life Span of High Power Sodium Lights

High pressure sodium bulbs, or HPS bulbs, are designed primarily for indoor growing and hydroponic gardening. However, they are also used in construction and other operations that need a high intensity light source. HPS bulbs are full-spectrum bulbs, which have a wide range of color temperatures. The light from high pressure sodium bulbs is very bright.
  1. Power and Model

    • The lifespan of a high pressure sodium bulb varies with the size, strength, care and operation of the bulb. The quality of the bulb depends on the model and manufacturer; low-quality bulbs may last less than 1,000 hours, while high-quality bulbs may last up to 30,000 hours.

    Average Life Span

    • The average lifespan of high pressure sodium bulbs is in excess of 20,000 hours, according to J J de Groot; author of "The High-Pressure Sodium Lamp." A ballast is required to safely operate HPS bulbs, as the power must gently be increased and decreased to prolong life.

    Operation

    • The conditions in which the bulb is used also play a role in determining its life. Prolonged use of a bulb in extreme temperatures can negatively affect the bulb. The sodium vapor inside the bulb is sensitive to temperature changes.

    Advances

    • Advanced in HPS bulb technology have resulted in increasing longevity. The newest industrial-model bulbs have been tested at over 50,000 hours in ideal conditions.
