Vaulted Entryway Lighting Ideas

The vaulted entryway is an eye-catching and luxurious welcome to the home. The high ceilings create a challenge when deciding on the lighting for the space. Vaulted ceilings give a light and airy feel to the space with large open windows, but lighting is an important element during the evening hours. The lighting fixtures in a vaulted entryway can create a warm entrance area for visitors.
  1. Layered Lighting

    • With the large amount of vertical space in a vaulted ceiling, the entryway must have a selection of lighting to chase away the dark corners. Layered lighting is an approach that allows the homeowner to include several different types of fixtures in the entryway to accommodate every situation. The layered approach includes lighting at the top of the ceiling to prevent shadows overhead, drop lights or pendants to bring a layer of light directly over the entryway and sconces to decorate on the ground level.

    Accent Lighting

    • Accent lighting highlights the architectural features of the high, vaulted ceiling. The lighting can circle the perimeter of the ceiling to draw the eyes up to the impressive height. Vaulted ceilings with exposed beams work well with accent lighting that enhances the appearance of the wood.

    Chandelier

    • Pendants and chandeliers bring the light down from the high ceilings to a useful level. A vaulted ceiling in a large entryway accommodates an elaborate chandelier that can serve as the focal point for the room. When the chandelier is the only light on in the entryway, it creates an interesting pattern of shadows above on the high ceilings as well.

    Wall Sconces

    • Wall sconces provide additional illumination to the foyer to reduce shadows in corners in a large area. While pendant lighting or chandeliers provide light directly below the fixture, it does not illuminate the entire space. The sconces can also provide light without using the pendant or chandelier.
