How to Convert From Recessed to LED

Remove a bulb from a recessed fixture if you don't have any spare bulbs by setting up the ladder and turning the bulb counterclockwise. LED recessed lights sizes vary and you can either take the existing bulb with you or measure it at home. Write down the diameter or the size on a sheet of paper to take with you when you obtain your replacement bulbs.

Find LED bulbs at home improvement stores, hardware stores, grocery stores or big box stores. Determine that the LED bulb will work in your sockets. As of July 2011, LED bulbs have screw threads exactly like incandescent bulbs do, so you should be able to find the size you need.

Remove the LED bulbs from their package and carefully place on a towel or other soft surface.

Set up the ladder and remove the existing bulb, replacing it with the LED bulb. It helps to have someone standing beside you to take the old bulb and hand you the new bulb. Continue until you have replaced all the bulbs. Turn on the wall switch to verify that all the bulbs work. If one doesn't, check to see if it's tight enough. If it doesn't work after tightening, remove it and return it to the store with your receipt to get a replacement.

Donate your old bulbs to a thrift store or store them for a quick replacement until you have a chance to get a new LED bulb.
