How to Swag a Cord

If you have a room with no ceiling light, illuminate the entire room without expensive rewiring by installing a swag lamp. Swag lamps hang down in the center of a room, often lighting a dining table or other focus piece. Hang the lamp where the light is focused on the most commonly used part of the room, or simply in the center of the ceiling. Cover the cord with an attractive chain or cover and you can drape it, or swag it, to the edge of the room and a plug.

Instructions

    • 1

Drill a hole in the ceiling through a stud at the spot where you want your lamp to hang. This spot is often in the center of the room or in the center of the dining room table. Install a hook from the hardware kit at this spot.

    • 2

Measure the distance between the lamp hook and the outlet. Drill a hole exactly halfway between these two points and install another hook.

    • 3

Thread the lamp cord through the chain or cover that came with the hardware kit. This covers the cord somewhat, giving it a more attractive look.

    • 4

Measure the height at which you want to hang the lamp. Most dining room lamps are positioned about 3 feet above the table, while room lamps hang 80 to 90 inches above the floor. Hang your lamp so that the bottom of the lamp hits the height measurement you want.

Bring the plug to the hook in the ceiling at which the lamp is hung to double up the cord, which will show you the middle of the cord. Hang the middle of the cord on the second hook in the ceiling, halfway between the lamp and the plug. The cord will swag down between the lamp and the hook.

Plug the cord into the outlet. The remaining chain will swag down between the hook and the outlet.
