Groovy Lamp Ideas

The word "groovy" typically refers to the lively, somewhat garish style epitomized by the 1960s. You don't need to purchase a pricey vintage lamp to bring groovy style to your bedroom, 60's-themed bachelor pad, retro clothing boutique or themed graduation party. Simply find or modify a lamp with the colors, motifs and icons of the groovy, swingin' 1960s.
  1. Lava Lamp

    • Lava lamps can be found in just about any color.

Get a lava lamp if you enjoy watching the steady, hypnotic motion of the blobs inside lava lamps and don't mind having a lamp that some might consider kitschy. Lava lamps come in dozens of color combinations -- the liquid and the blobs are typically different colors -- so they can be purchased to match any preexisting decor.

    Sixties Colors Lamp

    • With time and craftiness, even the squarest lamp can be made groovy.

Make or purchase a groovy lamp featuring the colors and patterns of 1960's hippies. For example, you could paint the base of a plain lamp sunshine yellow. Top the yellow lamp base with a plain white lampshade painted in a tie-dye-inspired pattern using diluted purple, yellow and orange paints. This approach to getting yourself a groovy lamp is particularly appropriate for someone on a very limited budget or with a preference for handcrafted, customized appliances.

    Vintage Lamp

    • Purchase a lamp dating back to the original groovy era -- the 1960s -- if you want your groovy lamp to be authentic or if you are a vintage decor buff. Vintage lamps vary widely in price, style and availability, so narrow down your choices by figuring out your budget and your definition of "groovy." For example, while some high-end lamps made in the 1960s were undoubtedly anything but "groovy" back then, the mere fact that they are vintage 60's lamps may make them groovy to you today.

    Retro Photos Lamp

    • Adorn a lamp with retro photos if you want a one-of-a-kind groovy lamp and you are the craft sort. Assemble a collection of 60's-era photos, along with scissors and decoupage paste. Cover the base or the shade of the lamp with the photos. You may want to make a photo collection centered on an appropriately groovy theme, such as "Haight Street hippies" or "the space program in the moon-landing days." Print copies of the photos on thin paper rather than destroying originals by adhering them to the lamp.
