Ideas for Victorian Lighting Fixtures in Place of an Old Fluorescent Box

Replace an outdated fluorescent light box with an ornate Victorian-style fixture. The ceiling around the light box may need to be repaired and repainted to clean up the area in preparation for the new fixture. Whether you choose a pendant, a drum with a Victorian pattern, a chandelier or a hanging glass lamp, Victorian lighting will be an improvement over the fluorescent box.
  1. Victorian Pendants

    • Look for delicate Victorian pendant lamps gilded in gold patterns or with swirling metal designs. To replace an area with a fluorescent box, create a line of Victorian pendants. For instance, above the island in your kitchen, depending on the length of the island, hang three to five pendants to light the area. Or, hang the series of pendants above a bar or your kitchen table. Vary the look of the room by choosing two different types of pendants and hang them at varying lengths.

    Victorian Drum Shade

    • Jazz up a plain white drum shade with a Victorian motif of your choosing. Motifs to consider include a Victorian lady, Victorian boots, crowns, floral designs, jewelry, cameos and anything else that catches your eye. Stamp the design onto the lamp, paint it free hand or have your image enlarged and affix it with spray glue to cover the lamp. Or, cover the white shade with black lace and finish it with a beaded fringe. Hang the drum pendant anywhere a previous fluorescent box stood. Ideas include above a dining room table or above a reading chair in the living area.

    Victorian Chandelier

    • Victorian chandeliers make a statement in any room. For a bedroom choose a smaller piece and hang it over the bed. Silver, gold or brass chandeliers with crystal charms dangling to catch the light, are ideal for this type of application. For a foyer, choose a larger Victorian-style chandelier and hang it in the center of the room. Pair it with Victorian sconces or a delicate candelabra for a dramatic effect. Connect the chandelier to a dimmer switch to control the mood of your entryway with dim lighting.

    Victorian Stained Glass Lamps

    • Stained glass lamps are a popular Victorian touch you can add to any room in place of fluorescent lighting. Pair a hanging stained glass lamp in a dining room, next to a living area with a small stained glass table lamp. Balance the look of the room by placing another Victorian-style table lamp on the other side of the room. For your second choice, look for a hanging lamp with an ornate white shade with a beaded fringe, or another table lamp with a beaded fringe. If the ceiling is badly damaged beneath the fluorescent box, add a Victorian-style medallion when you install the stained glass lamp.
