How to Fix Split Wires to a Light

Electrical wires split from a switch are used to power light fixtures. Making these attachments is very similar from one fixture to another, making wiring of one type of light similar to wiring others. This uniformity makes the process easier once you become familiar with the process, but as with any electrical work, proper safety and code issues must be respected.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the breaker feeding the switch and lighting junction box at the main electrical panel.

    • 2

Unscrew the two screws holding the cover over the junction box with the standard screwdriver. Rotate the wire nuts covering the bare wires counter-clockwise by hand. Pull out the black and white wire pair, allowing easier access.

    • 3

Find the black and white wires protruding from the back of the light fixture. Set the stranded wires in the fixture and the solid wires from the junction box parallel.

    • 4

Rotate a new wire nut clockwise onto each wire pair, joining white to white and black to black. Carefully push the wires back into the junction box, ensuring that the wire nuts do not become dislodged in the process.

    • 5

Attach the new fixture to the mounting bracket as specified in the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 6

Turn the breaker back on and test the light.
