How do I Change a Light Diffuser?

Light diffusers are the plastic covers that cover florescent light bulbs to evenly distribute the light around a room. Over time, these covers can yellow or crack, warranting the need for replacement. The good news is, you can easily replace the diffusers yourself. Replacement diffusers are sold at hardware stores or can purchased from online retailers. Get a partner to help you take down heavy frames and lift tools while you're up on the ladder.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and length of your existing light diffuser. Pick a replacement diffuser of the same size.

    • 2

If your light is a custom size and you can't find a right-sized diffuser, pick one that is bigger than your light and cut it down to size. For wraparound diffusers, you will need to make sure the diffuser is the appropriate width for your fixture.

    • 3

Mark your light's measurements on the diffuser. Put masking tape along the lines where you will cut to prevent the acrylic from cracking. Using your utility knife, carefully score the lines until you cut through the acrylic. You may need to turn the diffuser over and score the other side to cut all the way through.

Use a ladder to reach the light, and unscrew or remove the existing light diffuser. If you are replacing a framed light diffuser, use a screwdriver to pry the old diffuser out of the frame. Put the screws in a safe place and set the old diffuser to the side.

Snap the new diffuser in place. If you are using a frame, replace the screws that hold the diffuser sheet.
