How to Hide a Lamp Cord

Lamp cords can be unattractive and they often look a bit messy. One way to overcome this decorating issue is by covering these cords with a simple slip-over style cover of scrunched fabric that slides over the cord and hides it. A second simple way to cover a lamp cord is to wrap the cord in an attractive material using hot glue. Both simple covers take a only a short time to complete.

Instructions

  1. Sew a Cord Cover

    • 1

Cut fabric twice as long as your lamp cord. Cut the width to the fattest measurement around your plug plus 1 inch.

    • 2

Fold the short end of the fabric to the back and sew a hem. Repeat for the second end. Place your fabric right sides together along the length. Pin to hold the fabric in position.

    • 3

Sew a 3/8 inch seam along the length of the cover. Trim the seam close. Attach a large safety pin to one end of the fabric. Thread the safety pin into the pocket and work the pin through the pocket until you can turn the cover right side out. Unpin.

    • 4

Slide the cover over the cord. Using a needle and thread, sew a tack stitch at each end of the cover to close the end and hold the cover in position.

    Wrap a Cord

    • 5

Measure the length of the cord and multiply by three. Cut a material like rope, ribbon, raffia, trim or anything that can be wrapped over the lamp cord.

    • 6

Position the last 2 inches of the end of your material facing the lamp and lay it on top of the cord. Apply a bead of hot glue under these 2 inches and glue the end to the cord. Turn the material at a 90-degree angle so that it is perpendicular to the cord.

    • 7

Apply hot glue around the cord. Press the material against the top of the plug where the cord starts. Wrap the material around the cord evenly. Continue adding glue and wrapping. The sides of your material should touch so that no part of the cord shows at all. Wrap and glue all the way to where the cord enters the lamp. Trim the end and tuck it under itself when you glue the last wrap.
