How to Make Hanging Lantern Cords More Attractive

The most unattractive elements when decorating with hanging lamps or lanterns are often the cords, which can stand out like cheap eyesores. If a hanging lantern cord has to be visible, make it fit with your decor theme and add to the ambiance. One simple way to make hanging lantern cords more attractive, especially in rustic or country settings, is to wrap them in a complementary material.

Things You'll Need

  • Hanging lanterns
  • Fabric tape
  • Flat braided leather cord

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of your lantern wire and multiply by four. Cut your braided leather cord to this length. Wrap the end of the braided leather cord with fabric tape to prevent the end from fraying. Place the last 2 inches of the leather cord on the wire just above the plug. The taped end should face the lantern.

    • 2

Apply a bead of hot glue to the wire and glue the 2 inches of cord to the wire. Pinch the leather cord just above the plug and turn the cord until it is perpendicular to the wire. Hold the cord to the wire while you add glue around the wire.

Wrap the leather around the wire and over itself to anchor the cord to the wire. Add more glue and wrap the cord around the wire as close to the first leather wrap as possible. Continue wrapping the leather tight to the cord so that no cord is visible. When you near the end of the wire stop and figure out your end length plus an inch for tucking the end under. Trim your leather cord and wrap the end with tape.

Tuck your end under in the last row so that the taped end is hidden.
