How to Make a Rope Lamp

Rope-covered lamps aren't just for nautical themes. They also complement rustic styles, vintage homes and boho-chic getaways. Rope is a natural-fiber material, meaning it goes with any décor utilizing other natural or recyclable materials. Plus, it's an eco-friendly, inexpensive way to cover that flea-market lamp with the horrible coloring and beautiful lines. The rope covers up ugliness while retaining the lamp's shape. Everyone will ask you where you got your chic lamp and be amazed when you tell them you made it yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the shade and lightbulb from the lamp and set them aside. If the shade harp comes off, remove it, too. The more you can break down your lamp, the easier it will be to wrangle while you work.

    • 2

Spray your lamp with window cleaner and wipe it down with a soft cloth. This removes dirt and oil that may prevent the adhesive from sticking correctly.

    • 3

Place two paint stirrers, bridge-like, across the top of a bucket. Flip your lamp upside-down and slip the socket assembly between the stirrers. Rest the shoulders of the lamp on the stirrers. This gives you better access to the body of the lamp.

    • 4

Spread an even layer of tile cement over the first 2 inches of the base of your lamp. Press rope into the cement, winding it around the lamp as you go. Keep the layers of rope very tight together.

    • 5

Continue spreading cement and wrapping rope around the lamp until it's completely covered. Turn the lamp right-side up and coil rope around the shoulders of the lamp at the base of the socket assembly. Allow the cement to cure for at least 24 hours.

Reassemble the lamp harp, bulb and shade. You should have a stylish, eco-friendly lamp that you can light with pride.
