How to Make Neon Lights Blink

Created in the early 1900s by Frenchman Georges Claude, neon was first used for advertising in 1923 by a Los Angeles Packard automobile dealer. Neon's advertising potential was quickly realized due to its visibility. Primarily, neon consists of inert gases enclosed in a hand-shaped glass tube, with the type of gas determining the neon's color. When electrified, the light glows. Neon can also be made to blink, and converting a non-blinking light into one that blinks is a matter of exchanging transformers.

Things You'll Need

  • Neon light
  • Flashing neon transformer
  • Carpet knife, or craft knife
  • Small needle-nose pliers
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Drill (optional)
  • Drill bits (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the size of the transformer your neon sign requires. The transformer is the boxlike device that powers the neon light, and the light's electrical plug is attached to it. All necessary electrical information is found on the back of the transformer, and the output specifics, such as 6000, 10000 and 12000 kv (kilovolts), are used to determine the proper transformer.

    • 2

Purchase the proper output flashing transformer from a sign dealer, or online sites such as Parts For Signs and The Neon Sign Guy. Flashing neon transformers are readily available online, and many alternate between flashing and nonflashing settings.

    • 3

Unplug the neon light before replacing the transformer. Do not just turn the sign off.

    • 4

Remove the rubber boots covering the two transformer wires. There are two wires connecting the transformer to the neon light, and the boots protect the connection. Using a carpet knife, or craft knife, gently cut the boot at the end closest to the transformer, about 1/2 inch. Begin to separate the boot from the wire. Continue slicing the boot in a straight line, separating it as you go. Be very careful not to break the glass tubing at the sign end of the boot. Separate and remove the boot. Repeat this process on the second wire and save the boots.

    • 5

Unfasten both wires from the neon light. At the point where the wire meets the glass tubing, the wires are twisted together. Carefully untwist them using a small, needle-nose pliers. Once again, take care not to break or crack the glass tube.

    • 6

Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the transformer from the neon light, unscrewing any mounting screws fastening the transformer to the frame. Fasten the new flashing transformer to the light frame by screwing it on. It may be necessary to drill new holes into a new bracket to line the holes up to the frame.

    • 7

Re-attach both wires to the light by twisting them together. Tighten the wires slightly with needle-nose pliers. Slide the boots back on the wires to cover the connection and carefully seal the boots with electrical tape.

    • 8

Plug in and operate the neon light.
