How to Power a Cold Cathode Through a USB

The universal serial bus (USB) protocol is a feature on many pieces of consumer electronics. Whether from your computer, laptop, gaming system, or even digital satellite box, USB's 5-volt output is useful for powering and charging external devices. Cold cathode lighting is one such option. Typically smaller in form factor, these small lights are ideal for illuminating a laptop keyboard or equipment rack.

      Locate the small, rectangular USB port on the equipped device. Note the tab inside the port, indicating jack orientation.

      Slide the USB plug into the jack. Ensure the plug is inserted straight into the jack to avoid damaging the delicate internal pins or plastic orientation tab.
