The Advantages of LED Lighting for Exterior Lights

Power Savings

• LED bulbs provide significantly more efficient light output than outdoor lights using an incandescent, halogen or compact fluorescent light bulbs. However according to the Department of Energy, the most efficient cool white LED bulbs are only slightly more efficient than metal halide or linear fluorescent lighting. These figures are based on the average light output of each type of bulb compared to the power required to operate them and do not other factors into account.

Durability

• LED lights are constructed from solid state circuitry that are more resistant to damage from impacts. Unlike compact fluorescent lights, the durability of LED light bulbs is not decreased if they are rapidly turned on and off. LED lights are also less prone to sudden failure than other types of light bulbs and will gradually decrease in their level of light output after reaching the end of their life expectancy instead of failing completely. Most LED lights are rated for an average of 50,000 hours of usage before they begin to fail.

Size

• The compact design of LED lights makes them useful for a variety of exterior lighting applications. LED lights are often used in solar powered yard and pathway lights. These applications benefit from the compact size, efficiency and long life span of LED bulbs to provide unobtrusive outdoor lighting that requires little attention or maintenance.

Lighting Control

• You can further increase the energy efficiency of LED lights with fixtures that control how and when your exterior lights are on. Exterior LED light fixtures with integrated timers or motion sensors will provide lighting only when you require it. LED lights are also available in multiple colors and provide more accurate control over the color temperature of your outdoor lighting than other types of bulbs. LED bulbs are often more effective in outdoor applications than other types of bulb since they produce more directional light than other bulbs. This characteristic of LEDs makes the light they produce more effective at illuminating areas since less light is diffused in the wrong direction.
