Push "S" hooks into the top of the lantern if it doesn't already have hooks to hang it with. Push two or three hooks into the top of round paper lanterns, spaced evenly apart, or push one "S" hook through each side at the top rim of a square or rectangular lantern.
Tie a piece of fishing line, about 10 inches long, to each hook, then tie the ends of each line together into a knot at the top. Thread an "S" hook through this knot;. You will use this hook to hang the lantern from the string lights.
Secure one end of the string lights to a tree, a window frame or other stationary object where you want to display the lanterns.
Fold a small section of the lights and secure them with rubber bands to create a line of string lights that hangs down from the main line. The hanging line should be short enough to fit inside the paper lantern. Create one line for each lantern and space them the same distance apart. For example, if you have a 12-foot string of lights and three lanterns that are 6 inches long, fold a 6-inch line of string lights every 3 feet.
Secure the other end of the string lights to another tree or stationary object. You now have string lights with enough evenly spaced lines hanging down to accommodate all your lanterns.
Hook the lanterns to the string light using the "S" hook, and place the hanging line inside the lantern. The smaller line of lights will illuminate the lantern.
